Competition for Water-polo scholarships is fierce as coaches value international water-polo players just as much as they do domestic water-polo players. Water-polo is not available at every college or university, and Californian schools tend to dominate the sport.

The top Water-polo programs are currently at the University of Southern California, Stanford University, the University of California-San Diego and the University of Hawaii.

The NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association, is the governing body for collegiate water polo.

The NCAA has member institutions that sponsor both Men's and Women's water polo programs at Division I and Division II levels. There are 21 D1 and 9 D2 Men's Water Polo programs. Currently programs are allowed to sponsor more scholarships for women than for men.

Competition is fierce for Water polo scholarships in the USA. The NCAA sanctions a total of 78 men's teams and 109 women's teams across Divisions I, II and III. Within each of these teams, Men receive 4.5 scholarships, and women receive 8 scholarships.
